Zone Delegation Checker

This tool can be used to check a reverse zone setup in the DNS. It follows the routines that the RIPE NCC uses for reverse zone delegation. You can use it by entering the domain name of the zone you wish to check, and hitting the submit button.

Although we only use it for 'prospective' reverse zones, it is almost equally applicable for existing zones and forward zones. For that reason we have made it accessible from the RIPE NCC website.

The emphasis of the routine is on checking delegations. The only DNS records which are checked at each nameserver are:

  • the NS records
  • the SOA resource record and its content.
In the case where a secure delegation is requested, DNSKEY and RRSIG records are also taken into account.

Additional checks the RIPE NCC may perform when delegating a reverse zone include the number and/or names of nameservers and RIPE Whois Database authorisation information. These checks are not included in this tool.
